Fluorinert is "a family of perfluorinated liquids offering unique properties ideally suited to the demanding requirements of electronics manufacturing, heat transfer and other specialized applications." This liquid typically sells for several thousand dollars a liter (and you thought that gasoline was expensive!) Here is a good opportunity to pick up some at a bargain price. I found one website that wanted $500 for 1/4 of a liter !!!
This Fluorinert came from our Advanced Test Department and is dated 11/01. I spoke with a few of these guys and they believe that this fluid might have been used in a temperature bath and then re-stored into the original container so I cannot say with certainy that this substance is unused. From all indications, it looks very clean and unused. The description from 3M also mentions that this fluid is exceptionally stable over time so no degradation should occur. Because Fluorinert liquid FC-40 is primarily a single compound, its composition will not shift or fractionate with time. This keeps fluid loss to a minimum and insures that transport properties will not change with time.
